THE GAME OF CRIBBAGE
The following is a very brief explanation of how to play the
game.
SCORING:
All scoring is done on the cribbage board using two pegs per
player. The player takes the back most peg and moves it in
front of the other peg the number of points scored. This is
done for you in this version of the game. The first player to
win 121 points wins the game. If the opponent has not yet
scored 91 points , he is "SKUNKED" for double the bet. If he
has not yet scored 61 points he is "DOUBLE SKUNKED" for three
times the bet. In this version of the game a SKUNK = the loss
of 2 games and a DOUBLE SKUNK = the loss of three games.
- THE DEAL -
You begin the game of cribbage by cutting the cards to see
who deals. In Cribbage the low card wins. Six cards are
dealt to each player. Each player discards two cards, face
down, to "the Crib". The result of this is that there are now
three hands of four cards each: the dealer's, the other
player's and the Crib. The Crib belongs to the dealer and is
set aside until after "THE PLAY". From now on the deal
alternates between players as does possession of the Crib.
After cards are thrown to the Crib the player who did not
deal cuts the cards and the dealer turns over the "UP" card.
If this card is a Jack the dealer scores 2 points.
-THE PLAY-
Beginning with the person that did not deal, players play one
card at a time by laying it face up in front of them. Aces
count one point, face cards count 10, and all others count
their face value. A running total of the value of all cards
played is kept and this is continued until a player can not
play a card that will keep the running total under 32. At
that point that player announces "GO" and if the other player
can, he continues playing cards until he too can not play a
card that will keep the total under 32 points. That player
then pegs one point for the "GO" unless he makes exactly 31
in which case he pegs 2 points. The player who announced "GO"
then begins the process again if he has any cards left. This
continues until all cards in both hands are played. If one
hand runs out of cards that counts as a "GO" and the other
player continues to play and gets any "GO" points that may
occur. If a player manages to play a card which makes the
total exactly 31 he pegs 2 points and the other player begins
the process again. When both players are out of cards "THE
PLAY" is over. Both players pick up there cards and the game
moves to "THE SCORING"
- SCORING DURING THE PLAY -
If, by your play, you create the following condition, you peg
the points shown, remembering you must keep the total under
32 points.
A Pair = 2 points: 3 of a kind = 6 points: 4 of a kind = 12
points: If the total played is 15 = 2 points. A run = the
number of cards in the run. Curiously the run need not be in
order. If you play a 7 then your opponent plays a 9, you may
play an 8 and claim 3 points for a run of 3 though the order
of play is 7,9,8. Double and other multiple runs are not
counted in "THE PLAY". Points are cumulative. If the cards
played were 4,5,6, the player playing the 6 would peg 5
points: 2 for the 15 and 3 for the run( assuming the total =
15 ).
- THE SCORING -
After "THE PLAY" each player picks up his cards and "scores"
his hand. The player who did NOT deal always scores first.
This is important at the end of the game because he can win
while the dealer is waiting to score. When scoring, the "UP"
card (see the deal) is included in the hand. Points are
scored for the following:
2, 3 or 4 of a kind, or a run score the same as in THE PLAY.
FLUSH of 4 or more cards = as many points as in the flush (4
or 5 points), however for a flush to be valid all four cards
in the hand must be the same suit.
KNOBS occurs if the hand has a Jack that is the same suit as
the "UP" card. This scores 1 point.
- EXAMPLE -
Consider the case of holding the following: 4,5,5,6,7( one of
the cards is the "UP" card included for scoring purposes).
This is known as a "DOUBLE" run as there are two runs of
4,5,6,7. It is common to score this as "Double run for 10".
This counts the two 4 card runs for 8 points and the pair of
5's for two points. In addition there are two combinations of
cards that add up to 15 for 4 more points. The total for the
hand, then, is 14 points unless there is a flush. When the
opponent has finished scoring, the dealer scores his hand in
the same way. The dealer then picks up the Crib cards and
scores them the same way too. Scoring is identical for the
crib EXCEPT: Flushes only count if all five cards are the
same suit.
- MUGGINS GAME -
Also known as "Cut Throat". If your opponent is scoring his
hand (or crib) and misses some points, you can claim and peg
the points he missed. Of course the reverse is also true.
Normally this would also apply during the play but not in
this game. If you choose "MUGGINS" play, the computer will
make normal counting mistakes about 5% of the time. It will
also catch ALL of your mistakes. If you call the computer on
a counting error and it turns out YOU are wrong, the computer
will recount and if it counts correctly it gets ALL the
points regardless of whether it was wrong in the first count.
